More Information About this South Iceland Waterfall Tour

Gljúfrafoss and Skógafoss Waterfalls

Driving south on Highway 1, we’ll introduce you to the geology of the south coast of Iceland. While we stop at the magnificent waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss, you will also see Iceland’s newest star, the Eyjafjallajökull volcano that erupted in 2010, not far from there we visit the hidden Gljúfrafoss waterfall. Driving a little farther east, you will visit the powerful Skógafoss waterfall with its 60 metre (200ft) drop and formidable spray. On sunny days, the waterfall often has a visible rainbow throughout the day.

Sólheimajökull Glacier

After the breath-taking beauty of Skógafoss waterfall, we’ll head out towards the glacier Sólheimajökull, one of the outlet tongues of the ice cap Mýrdalsjökull. During the winter, we may find extremely icy conditions, and the weather may be extremely windy and cold. Ice walkers can be useful, and warm clothing recommended.

Reynisfjara – Black Sand Beach

This tour follows the coastline until we reach Reynisfjara, the beautiful black sand beach that attracts visitors to Iceland from all over the world. It’s not just the strange black sand that stands out, you will also see the striking hexagonal basalt pillars standing close together in strange almost-organised patterns. There are also a few sea stacks jutting out of the ocean. Any one of these features would make Reynisfjara worth visiting. Put them together and you have one of the best places in Iceland.

The Town of Vik

Another site of the South Coast is the small town of Vík, where we usually take the lunch stop, but we also have another option for lunch at Reynisfjara. The weather, timing, and amount of people will determine which place we stop at for lunch.

The gastronomic selection once outside Reykjavik is the one of a sparsely populated country, where the fuel stations are the blood line. Don’t expect fancy restaurants.
